Ice Cream Sandwich coming to Galaxy S2 in March?
After Samsung’s announcement back in November 2011 that the Samsung Galaxy S2 would be receiving the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, we all knew it was only a matter of time before Samsung would give an estimated release date. And it seems that today is the lucky day as Samsung announced on their official Samsung Norway page that the Galaxy S2 and its hybrid tablet sibling the Galaxy Note will be receiving the Ice Cream Sandwich goodness sometime in February or March of 2012 in Norway.
However, those in other countries should take note: this doesn’t necessarily mean that your Galaxy S2 or Note will be receiving the update within the next couple months. From what we understand, Samsung is still busy testing Ice Cream Sandwich on multiple Galaxy S2 and Note devices from multiple countries to ensure full compatibility. Releasing the update isn’t as simple as releasing it to all Galaxy S2 or Note devices as Ice Cream Sandwich must be customized to fit the requirements for the specific countries and carriers.
It’s also worth noting that there are multiple versions of the Galaxy S2 on AT&T alone, with AT&T currently selling both the I777 and Skyrocket models. Having multiple models to support may be slowing Samsung down a bit in getting the update out there.
The fact that the Galaxy S2 and Note are receiving the update so fast in Norway, however, is probably a good indication of what’s to come. It means that Samsung is serious about bring the update out to its customers. And it’s likely that by the summer of 2012, Galaxy S2 and Note users in most countries will have Android 4.0 on their devices.
